Hans und Thomas, zwei fantastische MARATHON MEN

„The biggest chess tournament in history“ – LICHESS feierte sich selbst. Zu Recht: Über 25 Tausend machten mit! Beim 24 Stunden-Event, Modus 3 + 0, waren mit HUB18 alias Hans Barmbold und THOBISCH alias Thomas Biehler auch zwei Blitzer vom SC TURM dabei. Mit sensationellem Erfolg!
Um 1 Uhr des 28. Dezember ging’s los. Um 8 Uhr wollte der TURM-Chronist wissen, wie es um die Seinen steht. Er traute seinen Augen nicht: Hans lag sensationell auf Platz 22! Gerade hatte er ein Match gegen LORD_AXE, den Führende, der auch am Ende die Nase vorne hatte. Und Hans stand klar besser, ein Bauer mehr, bessere Zeit – und er verlor dann doch nach einem Fehlzug mit seinem Läufer. Am Ende aber ein Riesenerfolg, ein großartiger 30. Platz! Hans wird das Geschehen selbst kommentieren.
Thomas klinkte sich später ein, wollte just for fun mitmischen, fand aber offenbar großen Spaß am diesjährigen WINTERMARATHON. Relativ wenig Spiele, aber durch die Bank brillant – Platz 71!
HUB18 mit 483 Punkten Rang 30 (LORD_AXE hatte am Ende genau 1000), THOBISCH mit 417 Rang 71 – nun freuen sich die beiden TURM-Heroen auf die von LICHESS versprochene „unique trophy“.

Questions arise: Blitz (3 mins) or Bullet (90s), sleep or no sleep?
The Winter Marathon 2022 was on, from 28.12.2022 at 01:00 to 29.12.2022, 01:00; viewable at https://lichess.org/tournament/winter22 .
A great, but long day of chess, 24 hours; the Blitz Marathon was taking place! One day can seem quite long. The time mode was 3+0, with the possibility to halve the time to get extra points, 90s being Bullet. The prize was a digital trophy in the Lichess profile for the Top500. It was my sixth participation in such a marathon and my sixth Trophy. 25,203 players participated! 329,894 games were played with 23,636,874 moves! Almost the whole Lichess community was on its feet again!
After like 7 hours, I was in the the Top22, but holding pace with the Top10 is something else!!!
19 hours I played, with breaks in between, 364 games in total. 164 wins are compared to 146 losses, with 54 draws. With a performance of 2428 I am satisfied, with an average opponent rating of 2481! 483 points were enough for a place in the Top30, 30th Place, my all-time personal best!
Another three players from SC Turm did not miss the LICHESS spectacle, besides me played Thobisch, 71th, ChessTheory64, 54th & pleaseresignnow, 446th.
I was warned after 5 participations, now experienced too, but each marathon is different, because there is a different time mode each case! Constantly the next game started, the next strong opponent was ready, sometimes a game lasted only barely 2 minutes, then I gave up in an hopeless position or the opponent did this. I did halve the time nearly 25% of the games, I mostly played double-berserk games.

The next Marathon is 2+0, on the 15.04.2023, viewable under https://lichess.org/tournament/spring23 , maybe i can get there my new bullet all-time high, even more than my current peak of 2723!

In summary, it has been again a great, successful format and a wonderful organization of Lichess, many titled players and very good players participated!
